16th International Mine Action Symposium held in Slano

The 16th international Symposium „Mine Action 2019” was held from 8th to 11th April 2019 in Slano, Dubrovnik-Neretva County. The Symposium was organized by the Croatian Ministry of the Interior and CROMAC-Centre for Testing, Development and Training, and it was held under the patronage of the Croatian Government, with Hungary as a partner country. 170 participants from 31 countries from Europe, Asia and North and South America attended.

At the Symposium opening, among other speakers, the Director of CROMAC-Centre for Testing, development and Training, Mrs. Katarina Markt, held a welcome address, and the Symposium was opened by Mr. Damir Trut, Assistant Minister of the Interior, Envoy of the President of the Croatian Government and Envoy of the Minister of the Interior. After the official opening, the Hungarian Ambassador to the Republic of Croatia, H.E. József Zoltán Magyar, awarded Certificates of appreciation by the Hungarian Minister of the Interior to the Participants of „De-mine HU HR II“ Project. Finally, Mr. Damir Trut gave the overview of the new structure of the Croatian Civil Protection Directorate.

On 9th April, an introductory speech was held by H.E. Hans Brattskar, President of the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention 4th Review Conference. Furthermore, presentations on the topic of the global mine action experiences and mine action challenges and the migrant crisis were held, as well as a presentation of the DE-MINE HU HR II Project, conducted jointly by the staff of CROMAC and the Hungarian Ministry of the Interior.
In the afternoon of the same day, a demonstration of equipment was held, starting with presentations of the Regional Centre for Divers Training and Underwater Demining from Montenegro and the Special Police Command and Bomb Disposal Service of the Croatian Ministry of the Interior. The latter have also demonstrated the procedure of disposing of an underwater explosive ordnance. The use of dogs in demining was presented by the Federal Civil Protection Administration from Bosnia and Herzegovina and by the Croatian companies Heksogen and Piper. The Tohoku University from Japan demonstrated the improved version of the ALIS dual sensor, and the Italian company CEIA presented their metal detectors. A German company SeaTerra demonstrated the use of a drone system in mine action.
On Wednesday 10th pril, the topics at plenary sessions were new technologies in mine action, the topic with the largest number of presenters, and IEDS – experiences and methods of approach.
On the final day, 11th April, presentations were held on demining in forests, mine action financing and infrastructure safety with regard to explosive ordnances, and an overview and conclusions to the Symposium were given.
The Mine Action Symposium in Croatia is a unique one, gathering representatives of the research community, manufacturers, operational staff and decision makers in the field of mine action. As a result, one can continuously monitor the progress in the development and use of new technologies. Over the past 16 years, the Symposium draw some 2,500 participants from 67 countries, more than 450 presentations were held and some 50 companies from Croatia and abroad exhibited their equipment.
