Symposium Mine Action 2016

From 26th to 29th April, the 13th International Symposium and Equipment Exhibition Mine Action 2016 is being held in Biograd na Moru, under the high patronage of the Croatian President Kolinda Grabar Kitarović. The Symposium is co-organized by the Government Office for Mine Action, CROMAC and HCR-CTRO, and it is attended by 160 participants from 32 countries. The following topics are discussed: Contamination by ERW, Risks and safety in demining, New technologies, Cooperation and knowledge transfer; and MRE education and survivors’ assistance. The Symposium was declared open by Mr. Stipe Zrilić, Zadarska County Prefect and Envoy of the Croatian President. HRH Prince Mired Bin Raad Al-Hussein of Jordan gave his introductory speech.

Representatives of Jordan, led by the Prince and Director of National Center for Demining and Rehabilitation (NCDR), Mr. Mohammad Breikat, held presentations on ERW clearance in the Jordan Valley and on the Train-the-trainer MRE course, conducted together with HCR-CTRO among Syrian refugees in Jordan, financed by the Croatian Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs. After the presentation, Mr. Nikola Pavković, HCR-CTRO Director, and Ms. Jenny Oštarić Vunjak from the Ministry, announced the continuation of the cooperation with new training courses to be held.

On the 26th of April, the Workshop of the International Advanced Robotic Programme (IARP) was held, where the latest developments in the robotics field in mine action were presented.

On 27th of April, a demonstration was held near the town of Skradin. The participants attended a demonstration of the following organizations: a dog training school of the Norwegian Peoples' Aid (NPA) from Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Spinator company from Sweden with their information management device for application in technical survey, the EBOTLUTION Systems company from Spain with their robots and a drone. Professor Nikola Kezić from the HCR-CTRO Scientific Council explained the method of training honey bees to detect explosives, and a German Company Ebinger demonstrated their metal detectors. Demining machines were represented by the Croatian company DOK-ING, Slovakian company WAY INDUSTRIES, and the Israeli company GREENROAD demonstrated a bucket – sifter.

On 28th of April, CROMAC representatives presented activities at a technical survey work-site in the village of Stankovci, on a real work-site.

Numerous bilateral meetings were held during the Symposium, including those with Army Officers from Colombia and an Armenian delegation, where future cooperation was discussed.

The Symposium will end on 29th of April with conclusions from the plenary sessions.
